How to Wash a Comforter at the Laundromat (Step by Step)

4 min read

Why Use a Laundromat for Comforters?

Most home washing machines are too small for king-size comforters. Stuffing a comforter into a small machine means it won't get clean — it can't move around enough for the water and detergent to do their job.

Our giant 8-load Dexter washers give your comforter plenty of room to tumble and get thoroughly cleaned.

Step 1: Check the Care Label

Most comforters are machine washable, but always check the label first. Look for "machine wash" or laundry symbols indicating it's safe. If it says "dry clean only," take it to a dry cleaner instead.

Step 2: Pre-Treat Any Stains

Spot-treat visible stains before putting the comforter in the washer. A small amount of stain remover applied 10-15 minutes before washing makes a big difference.

Step 3: Choose the Right Washer

For king-size and California king comforters, always use our 8-load (Giant) washer. Queen comforters can fit in the 6-load washer. Never stuff a large comforter into a standard machine.

Step 4: Add Detergent

Use about half the normal amount of mild, liquid detergent. Too much detergent leaves residue in the comforter that's hard to rinse out. Skip the fabric softener for down comforters.

Step 5: Select the Right Cycle

  • Warm water for most comforters
  • Cold water for delicate or down-filled comforters
  • Normal or gentle cycle depending on the fabric

Step 6: Dry Thoroughly

This is the most important step. Use our 8-load dryer on medium heat. A comforter that feels "done" on the outside might still be damp inside. Run an extra 10-15 minutes to make sure it's completely dry.

Pro tip: Toss in a few clean tennis balls or dryer balls. They help break up clumps and distribute the fill evenly.

Step 7: Fluff and Fold

Once completely dry, give your comforter a good shake to redistribute the fill, then fold it up.

How Often Should You Wash Your Comforter?

Most experts recommend washing your comforter 2-4 times per year, or more often if you have allergies. Using a duvet cover and washing that weekly extends the time between full comforter washes.
